Toolbox Module Highlight: Caring for the Caregiver

Surviving cancer takes a team, and caregivers play an important role on that team. It’s common for caregivers to become overwhelmed by caring for a cancer survivor, and it’s important to keep in mind that a caregiver is also a survivor, or a co-survivor, because they too are surviving the challenges, responsibilities, and life-changing effects of the disease and its treatment. The Caring for the Caregiver module shares real-life stories and solutions that can provide caregivers with the hope and options they need, while showing ways to balance their own personal needs with those of the person they are caring for. Taking Care Plans to the Senate!

You wouldn't set out on a road trip without a map, would you? Yet, so many people with cancer don’t have a guide to their treatment options and follow-up care. The Comprehensive Cancer Care Improvement Act (CCCIA) empowers cancer survivors to participate in decision-making with their doctors and planning out their long-term care, while facilitating better coordination among multiple healthcare providers. It's thorough, individualized, and it meets survivors’ needs.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has just introduced the Senate version of the CCCIA, S. 1773. Having the CCCIA in the Senate moves us another step closer to making cancer care planning as a regular part of cancer treatment a reality. But we need your help! Urge your Senators to co-sponsor S. 1773 >>

Celebrate a Caregiver

A caregiver can be a family member, friend, or neighbor – anyone who provides support and assistance to someone experiencing a life-limiting illness, such as cancer. November is national family caregiver’s month, and we at NCCS encourage you to thank your own caregiver or a caregiver you know this month. By creating a Cancerversary page honoring your caregiver, you can share with others what this person’s selfless work means to you. It’s quick and easy to do, and it’s a great way to show appreciation for the many things a caregiver does. Create a Cancerversary page >>

We also created a Cancerversary Polls section where you can share your opinions about survivorship and issues that affect you as a survivor, loved-one or caregiver.
